Diversions

By the by, this all comes from the book

Complete Fortune Telling

by Agnes M. Miall

Agnes

Which, by doing a random search for a picture of the cover online, now retails for $9.90 despite being written in the 20s or 30s (I'm guessing by the cover).

ARCHER THE SAGITTARIUS

Riding an early morning ride,

With graceful figure set astride,

Swimming the Channel (well, not quite!),

Dancing with zest half through the night,

Playing at tennis, swift and strong,

Hiking the country lanes along,

Sculling a boat through sleepy water,

You'll find December's agile daughter.

An active maiden she will prove,

And one who's always on the move,

For, when her sports don't keep her busy,

She'll do, do something, till you're dizzy!

She crowds up each and every day,

Works hard, then goes as hard at play.

And that's not all.  For, between whiles,

She's helping lame dogs over stiles,

And teaching, to each limping rover,

Just how a stile should be got over!

A fairy godma, wise and gay,

The best of helpers, any day,

If she can help folk her own way.

A wee bit bossy.  But how true,

How kind, how quick to dare and do!

Dear Miss December, here's to you!

Additional Traits. ~Optimistic, though easily discouraged temporarily; rather finicking and fault-finding; anxious to advance education and causes generally; very affectionate; impulsive.

Her Life. ~She often marries twice and likes to keep on her work~or unpaid public work~after marriage.  As she wants to get to the top, her husband is generally Somebody with a big S.  Not always happy in marriage, but invariably opposes divorce or separation.

Mind you, this was written in the 30s.

THE DECEMBER BIRTH MONTH:
If cold December gave you birth,
The month of snow and ice and mirth,
Place on your hand a Turquoise blue,
Success will bless whate'ver you do.

Turquoise has always been my favourite colour...spooky! :)

Turquoise is a waxy, translucent or opaque precious stone of a blue or blue-green colour.  Its colouring and lustre vary with the feelings of its wearer, and it is said to fade when she is nearing death.  It protects from danger or misfortune.

And for my daughter....

CANCER THE CRAB

Give Cancer's girl the smallest chance,

She'll prove her middle name Romance.

For her brave knights on horseback prance,

And in the moonlight fairies dance.

The sea she loves, 'twill never fail her,

She's the nice girl who loves a sailor!

Love at first sight's the only love,

And in a cotage sweet will prove.

Thus, in a glamourous defiance,

Miss Cancer makes a mesalliance,

And then, alas! repents at leisure

Of following her romantic pleasure.

At best, she marries Peter Pan

(Perpetual boy); at worst, a man

Who will not work with any spur

And leaves the kiddies all to her.

Oh, then, Miss Cancer up and fights

To give her children all their rights!

For them, she puts aside her dreams;

For them, she works, endures and schemes,

For taking one thing with another,

She is the year's most splendid mother!

Additional Traits . ~Must have plenty of appreciation; moody, easily discouraged; discreet and diplomatic; sympathetic, but not very helfpful; very domestic.

Her Life. ~Born rover and loves long distance travel especially by sea; she usually makes rather an odd marriage, with someone foreign, much older or much youger, or in a different social rank.

Well. That could be me as well as the Sagittarius.

THE JULY BIRTH MONTH:
The glowing Ruby shall adorn
Those who in warm July are born.
Then will they be exempt and free
From love's doubt and anxiety.

Now that's nice.

The Ruby is the most precious of all jewels.  It is the same in composition, except for its colouring matter, as the sapphire, and has a similar clear brilliance.  We think of it as deep glowing red, but it may range between pink and almost violet.  It brings good fortune in friendship and banishes grief.
